Hunter shoots himself in foot
LOUNT – A hunter was taken to Huntsville Hospital after shooting himself in the foot on Nov. 5 near Rye Road.
Jay Faulkner, 58, of Huntsville was resting the muzzle of his new rifle on his foot when he inadvertently squeezed the trigger. He lost two toes and was released from hospital on Nov. 6. Four guns, including the Browning Arms .270 caliber Short Trac with Leupold high-powered scope that was involved, were seized by OPP to be held pending his trial.
Faulker was charged under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act with using a firearm carelessly to hunt.
Gun charge laid in car accident
SUNDRIDGE ¬ Police, EMS and fire crews responded to a single motor vehicle rollover collision on High Rock Road at about 5:20 p.m. on Nov. 12. David Gosbee, 44, of Thornhill was arrested and charged with careless use of a firearm and impaired driving.
Good Samaritans arrive
BURK’S FALLS – Five vehicles pulled over to assist a mother and her nine-year-old daughter who were in shock after ending up in the ditch on Nov. 15. The pair was heading north on Hwy. 11 near Pevensey Road at approximately 1:20 p.m. when the woman reacted to a southbound vehicle that pulled out in front of her to overtake another southbound vehicle. Neither southbound vehicle remained at the scene. No charges were laid.
Young offender admits to car theft – again
BURK’S FALLS ¬– At around 7:40 a.m. on Nov. 14 police responded to a car in a ditch on Royston Road. The vehicle was found with the airbags deployed but no one was at the scene. Police attended the owner’s residence and was greeted by a youth who said, “I did it again.” The youth had stolen a parent’s vehicle, again. The youth was charged with three counts under the criminal act and three counts under the highway traffic act. Including two counts of failing to comply with probation, theft over $5,000, careless driving, failing to report an accident, and driving without a licence.
Paintball spree ends in charges
SPRUCEDALE ¬ Charges have been laid in connection with a paintball spree that affected residences, a garage, the municipal office and a travelling vehicle in the Hwy. 518 and Stisted Road area between Oct. 28 and Oct. 30. Police arrested an 18-year-old from McMurrich/Monteith on Nov. 12. He has been charged with mischief in relation to this incident.
When trucks collide
SOUTH RIVER – Two gravel trucks collided on Chemical Road about four km east of Brennans Road. At about 9:45 a.m. on Nov. 10 a truck, fully loaded with gravel, skidded while trying to manoeuvre a curve and was struck by another truck coming the other way. No charges were laid.
Drunk driver caught
BURK’S FALLS – Ian Standing pulled his red GMC Jimmy into a RIDE spot-check at around 11:40 p.m. on Nov. 13. It was determined that he had been drinking. Standing, 33, of Burk’s Falls was arrested for impaired driving and charged with having over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Standing was also charged under the liquor license act for having access to open alcohol in his vehicle.
Minor head injury caused by crash
BURK’S FALLS – The driver of a vehicle on the way from Magnetawan to Burk’s Falls sustained minor head injuries after rolling her vehicle on Hwy. 520 approximately 7 km west of Burk’s Falls. The accident took place the morning of Nov. 16, when the driver hit slush and the vehicle rolled over into the ditch. An ambulance attended and released her at the scene. There were no charges laid.
Net lingo hits the wall
BURK’S FALLS – At around 9:20 a.m. on Nov. 14 a report came in that Land of Lake’s Senior Public School and a nearby transport truck had been subject to graffiti. It is believed that the incident had taken place sometime during the night. The north wall of the building denoted a message that was a combination of profanity and Internet language, including the ever-popular LOL, an abbreviation for laugh out loud.
Vandals throw stones
SPRUCEDALE ¬ On Nov. 14 at around 4:30 p.m. police responded to a cottage on Deerwood Drive that had been vandalized. Six windows had been broken causing about $400 in damages. It is unknown at this time who is responsible for the damage, but police are certain that they had been throwing rocks at the building.
