Christopher Harkness, 11, is all smiles at Robinson's Independent Grocer as he celebrates a grant received from the President Choice Children's Charity. The grant will be used to build a wheelchair ramp at his home.
SOUTH RIVER — Christopher Harkness's life has just been made a little bit easier, thanks to a grant from a charity.

The 11-year-old South River boy, who suffers from Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, the most severe form of the disease, received a grant from the President's Choice Children's Charity, through Robinson's Independent Grocer in Huntsville. It will be used to build a wheelchair ramp from the Harkness's house to their driveway. Up until now, the family has had to keep Christopher's wheelchair in their garage, because steps lead to their home. His electric wheelchair uses gel batteries and their shelf life is shortened by cold weather.

With the new ramp, Christopher will be able to move freely in and out of the house by himself. The ramp will also preserve the longevity of his wheelchair.

The President's Choice Children’s Charity is dedicated to making difficult lives a little easier by helping children who are physically or developmentally challenged.  This is the third year in a row the President’s Choice Children’s Charity has granted a local shopper from Robinson's with funding. Application forms for the charity can be picked up from Maggie Rittenhouse at Robinson’s, or through the charity directly by calling 1-866-996-9918 or visiting www.presidentschoice.ca/pccharity.
