SOUTH RIVER – It has been a year since supporters of the South River-Sundridge airport revived the Almaguin Flying Club as a step toward developing the airport.
After a year of change that sees the airport poised to grow, the club has decided to adopt the South River-Sundridge name as well. According to club president Bill Brown, the decision was a simple matter of clarifying the club’s identity.
“Most people didn’t know where Almaguin was,” said Brown. “If you say South River-Sundridge, people know where you’re at.”
With the new name comes a new logo, featuring a propeller and maple leaf on an oval of green and blue. The logo can be found on membership cards and a variety of club merchandise.
“With a membership, you get a hat, shirt and membership card,” said Brown.
The flying club plans to organize up to three fly-ins in 2008, building on the success of the 2007 fly-ins. Brown hopes one of these will include the Young Eagles program, which offers flights to kids aged 8 to 17.
“We’re working on getting them here again,” said Brown.
The club will also continue to assist with the operation and improvement of the airport in the coming year.
Membership in the flying club is $10 per year. For more information, call Bill Brown at 705-386-0755.
