Council votes to enforce curfew
Feb 20, 2008
KEARNEY — A council meeting came to a quick end on Jan 25.

Kearney council, if still within a meeting near their established curfew of 10:30 p.m., passes a resolution allowing them to extend their meeting.

At the Jan. 25 meeting, the resolution was defeated.

“I think it caught everyone by surprise,” said Mayor Jeff Johnston. “We went to vote and only two people raised their hands.”

Kearney has recently been attempting to shorten their meetings, which start at 6 p.m. and often don’t adjourn until near midnight.

Johnston said that council was still able deal with the remainder of their business in the 15 minutes they had before reaching curfew. He said the only items left to be discussed were mainly “housekeeping” and information only items.

Johnston called the defeated motion “kind of the right thing to do, inadvertently.”
