Theberge just misses beating dad's club record

ALMAGUIN – The Peterborough Petes record of three goals in just over a minute-and-a-half still reads ‘Theberge.’

For a few moments on Saturday, however, the first name attached to the club record seemed poised to change from Greg to Brett.

Sundridge-raised Brett Theberge, facing off against the Oshawa Generals on Jan. 19, scored two quick goals in a mere 21 seconds during the second period.

“We were on a power play,” Theberge explained, “and I got the pass and threw it in the net. Next it was three on two and I got a pass…and I fired it.”

Both goals were let in by fellow Almaguiner, Shea Cooper, in his OHL debut.

Theberge knew he was doing something special when he looked up at his father, Greg Theberge, in the stands and saw he had his camcorder on.

His father set a club record in 1978 in Ottawa, scoring three goals in 98 seconds.

Theberge then had another chance to make it a quick hat trick.

One defenceman fell, he said, but then the other got him in the corner, robbing him of the chance of a third goal.

How would dad Greg have felt about his 18-year-old son breaking his long-standing record?

“I would have loved to see him break it,” he said.
