Elaine Oshell and Powassan head librarian Helen McDonnell spent the morning of Oct. 29 reading some of the newest children resource books bought by the Powassan and District Union Library with money raised during last summer’s Hummel School Reunion in Trout Creek. Reunion organizers donated $1,300 to the library from the sale of reunion memorabilia in order to ensure the tradition of learning established at the one room schoolhouse would continue for Trout Creek area students.
POWASSAN – The doors of the Hummel school house in Trout Creek may have been closed since 1962, but local students are still benefiting from it’s dedication to learning.
On Oct. 29 the Powassan library received a new shipment of books, thanks to a donation of $1,300 raised during the Hummel school reunion last July.
“We made the money primarily from the sale of CDs depicting the history of the school,” said former Hummel pupil Elaine Oshell. “We sold the items at the reunion as a way of covering our costs, but when we had more money than needed, it was decided to use the surplus funds in a way that would reflect the school’s mandate and benefit area children.”
A further $650 was given to the Trout Creek Lions Club to help with their work on behalf of young people.
