Brainstorming session planned

ALMAGUIN – While some are said to have the acting bug, Lois Cookman can easily be said to have the theatre bug.

The Burk’s Falls-area resident is organizing a brain-storming session on Monday, Sept. 24 to generate interest in building a new community theatre as part of Almaguin Highlands Secondary School's (AHSS) replacement.

“There is so much talent here and such a struggle to find venues. I think this is a wonderful opportunity to get a great facility for our area,” said Cookman.

Cookman knows artistic talent, being a member of the Almaguin Choral Society, the Highland Players and the Burk’s Falls and District Arts Club. She knows these groups are very interested in a brand new space to show off their talents, but is looking for others who might take advantage of a full-fledged theatre.

“I've called a few people from the larger organizations, but I don’t know everyone who would use a theatre,” said Cookman.

She thinks a theatre could be used for more than dramatic purposes, noting groups ranging from karate to dance could take advantage.

“There are kids that would love to go dancing but don't have anyone to drive them to Huntsville. A facility like this could change that and give the area new opportunities.”

She also believes that the communities of Almaguin can come together for a vision like this.

“I know any involvement I have in any organizations it's not people from over here or there, but people getting things done,” said Cookman.

The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the boardroom at the high school and anyone is welcome to attend. Near North District School Board chair Al Bottomley and AHSS principal Ron Witmer are expected to be there.

“The school's coming. Why skimp now?” asks Cookman.
