POWASSAN – Home team advantage and family togetherness paid off for the Powassan team The Mommas and Poppas, who managed to beat out 13 other teams to win the annual Helen Mathias Memorial Slow Pitch Tournament held in Powassan last weekend, Aug. 17 to 19.
“We had some really good teams and played a lot of really good ball,” said event co-ordinator Al Hewson. “The Mommas and Poppas worked hard to win, and had some amazing players.”
The winning team was made up of members of the Mathias family and among the best team players was Helen Mathias’ son Ricky who in the final game ran from left field to centre field to catch the ball with three of the opposition team’s runners on base.
“It was plays like that the earned the family team the win,” said Hewson.
